CONSERVATION OF WILDLIFE HABITAT ON PRIVATE LANDS (CESCO)

A systematic literature review and comprehensive typology OF social
acceptance for conservation measures on private land
Private lands are increasingly targeted for ecological restoration and conservation initiatives in high-income countries. However, the fragmented nature of private land tenure, the large number of landowners and their heterogeneous socioeconomic profiles can pose significant challenges for conservation initiatives. We propose five recommendations to help support and design conservation programs and to identify intervention levers that may be acted upon to improve the social acceptance of such conservation initiatives (Tanguay et al. 2021).

Workshops on the perception and social acceptance of conservation measures on private lands in Québec
We conducted  workshops in three administrative regions of Quebec (Chaudières-Applaches, Montérégie and Outaouais) to probe the social perception and social acceptability of conservation measures to preserve wildlife habitats on private lands (Buttin et al. 2021).

Key findings:
1) Conservation faces many socio-political, economic and cultural challenges,
2) Some regional and local specificities: Targeted strategies,
3) Long-term commitment of the competent authorities

FUTURE FOR FRESHWATER TURTLES: EXPLORATION AND MEASUREMENT OF THE SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL AND CONTEXTUAL VARIABLES OF CONSERVATION ACTORS ON PRIVATE LANDS
Crown lands are no longer sufficient to limit the degradation of natural habitats. Private lands are at the center of all hopes… but also of many conservation concerns. Faced with conservation reticence among private landowners, there is desire among ecologists and government actors to identify the factors influencing the adoption of behaviors facilitating the conservation of threatened and vulnerable species.

Juliette’s project takes a socio-ecological approach.
The first objective is the identification of ecological threats to freshwater turtles populations and good practices in conserving their habitats to understandthe local ecological context. The second objective is the exploration and identification of local contextual and socio-psychological variables (value orientations, beliefs and personal norms) influencing behaviours towards freshwater turtles and their habitats from different actors perspective.
